Wikipedia

10 Awesome Tools To Get More Out of Wikipedia

Wikipedia is an ocean of information. While you may still want to seek secondary information sources before trusting it entirely, you cannot argue that the site contains a plethora of useful information.

That said, it's tough to navigate through so much data. You can get much more out of it in less time if you decide to ditch the conventional way of using the built-in Wikipedia search for scouring through the information. The following ten tools will help you search and use Wikipedia like never before. I am sure you'll love using some of them.

Navify
Navify is an excellent web service which shows a lot of additional information related to a Wikipedia article like related images, videos and articles.

So if you are searching for Barack Obama, you can see the Wikipedia article on him, his photos, and the Youtube videos of his speeches, all on one page. Hence it can be used as a good research tool.

Powerset
Powerset is a Wikipedia search engine which certainly produces much better results than Wikipedia's in-built search. It finds keywords related to your search term and also displays various articles and categories which could be relevant to your query.

AgainButSlower
AgainButSlower is an innovative tool which modifies Wikipedia articles to make them simpler and easier to understand. So if you are looking to gain some knowledge about "Quantum Mechanics " and the Wikipedia article looks intimidating with all the heavy scientific terms, then AgainButSlower can help you. In fact just try that term. You'll find it to be really cool.

VisWiki
VisWiki (formerly Visual Wikipedia) is one of my personal favorites. It is an incredible tool which can take your online research to new levels. Not only it pulls up extensive information about your query but also produces interactive maps showing connection between articles and terms which is really awesome.

Lexisum
Need a quick and uncluttered print out of a Wikipedia article ? Lexisum will help you do that. It displays print-friendly Wikipedia summaries which can be easily formatted and adjusted according to your printer settings.

PedioPhon
Another innovative and useful site. PedioPhon converts Wikipedia articles to mp3 recordings. So next time you feel like listening to something from Wikipedia while jogging then you know what to do.

Snapask
Snapask delivers Wikipedia articles to your cellphone via email. Just send an email to ask@snapask.com with the corresponding command in the subject line and you'll receive the information in 30 seconds.

Similpedia
Similpedia provides a new way to search Wikipedia. Instead of typing search terms, it asks you enter a url or a paragraph of text of at least 100 words and then it displays relevant Wikipedia articles related to that text.

Wikirank
Would you like to know which are the most read articles on Wikipedia and the trending articles in last 30 days ? Wikirank will show you. As I write this, the Beatles seem to dominate the scene. :)

DeletionPedia
And finally, if the current article database in Wikipedia can't satiate your hunger for information then you can browse through DeletionPedia, an archive for deleted Wikipedia articles. You might come across some interesting articles there.

Hope you like the tools. If you know of some other such cool Wikipedia tools then lets hear about them in the comments.

Beat Information Overload

Six Smart Ways To Beat Information Overload

Someone has rightly said - ' information is power '. There's nothing more valuable than getting the right information at the right time. And as always, the internet, with its abundant sources of information, is there to satiate as well as increase your desire for information.

I'm sure you'd agree that this power seems to overpower us everyday. How many days have you felt that you could have been more productive if you had not been twittering or checking emails or reading feeds the entire day? How many times has it happened that you completely lose track of time when you are watching news or browsing through your friends' updates in Facebook?

The truth is that you need information. Avoiding reading feeds or logging into Facebook isn't the solution. You need to filter and use information effectively. And that can only happen when you are more systematic in your approach towards dealing with the plethora of information you get everyday. Here are six tips to help you get started.

  1. Know what's causing it
It's important to know what's causing the information overload. Most people would go about checking their emails ten times everyday without realizing that it is a part of the information overload which they are facing.

Analyze your work day and decide on the activities which are essential and the ones which you could profit from doing less. For different people, it could be different things. It could be twitter for you and RSS feeds for someone else.

  2. Manage email
I have talked about managing your email before on this blog. It's true that a lot of us are addicted to checking email every 10 minutes. I was once too. Here's a tip - if you get less than 50 emails per day then check your email 3 times per day and allot 20 minutes to each of those time slots. Make sure you evenly spread those time slots throughout the day. And whether you check it on your PC or iPhone, stick to those time slots and resist the temptation to check email during rest of the day.

Those who get more than 50 emails per day, delegate the task to someone else. Set up auto-forward rule and train your virtual assistant. You may not want every email to reach your assistant's inbox so you may set up filters in your email based on the sender's email address.

Seriously, if you are someone who gets more than 50 emails per day, you need to start looking for an assistant to handle them.

  3. RSS feeds
The main intent behind the invention of RSS was to let people have access to information at one place and save them time. However, it could easily turn into a potential source of information overload which would suck your time instead of saving it.

When it comes to managing RSS feeds, prioritization is the key. Here are 8 useful tips to manage and avoid RSS overload. If you are a Google Reader user like me then here are some more tips to make you more productive while using it.

  4. Set time frames. Use a timer
It's really easy to lose track of time when you get sucked into one of the myriad sources of information on the net. It could happen to you when you are on twitter. It happens to me when I am watching Youtube videos. I vow to do it for ten minutes and end up spending an hour on it. Sounds familiar ? I'm sure it does.

Setting time frames for work and play is a good approach towards solving this problem. And to make sure you respect that time frame, use a timer. It could be a physical timer device or a software like this one.

  5. Avoid immediacy
Most of the time we get distracted by a random source of information like a twitter message, a breaking news, a video or an excellent article we come across while searching for something else. These things tempt us to give them immediate attention. And that's what we need to avoid.

Learn to save for later. Consume the information later, not instantly. Again, that's when setting time frames does the trick. When you know you would have the time later for fun, you would hesitate less while saving things for later.

  6. Don't go after every source
Filtering information sources is an important step towards beating information overload. Identify the type of information and associate one major source with it. And refer only to that source. For example, I have stopped reading newspapers and watching news channels. I have identified certain sources on the internet where I read all the news I want. Get the picture ?

9 Power Tips To Speed Up Your Web Browsing

9 Power Tips To Speed Up Your Web Browsing

Although the internet has been mainstream for over a decade now, high speed internet for everyone is still a distant dream. A huge number of users are still on dial-up. Those on broadband aren't always satisfied with the speed either. Everyone desires a faster web. Google wants that too.

Having said that, there are always certain workarounds which could add some swiftness to our web browsing. This article talks about nine such tips. Some of the tips help to increase the speed of your internet connection while others are productivity hacks which help you to get things done on the web quickly. The end goal is to help you become a more productive internet user.
  1. Use Google Chrome
Google Chrome is without a doubt the fastest browser on the planet. It opens up quickly, doesn't crash often and brings up web pages faster than other browsers.

Although it is still relatively new and doesn't boast of features like Firefox, you should definitely use it as often as possible. I personally use both Firefox and Chrome and have found Chrome to be much better performance wise.

  2. Set up OpenDNS
OpenDNS is an excellent free service which not only speeds up your internet connection but also provides an extra layer of your security to your connection. Apart from that, it has some other cool features like parental filters, opening pages from keyword shortcuts, auto-correcting mistyped urls and more.

Here are the detailed instructions for setting it up on your computer.

  3. Learn Keyboard Shortcuts
Keyboard shortcuts could speed up your internet browsing by a great deal. Be it your email, your feed reader or your browser, using only the keyboard to navigate will always save time.

Here is an excellent website called Keyxl which is like an online database for keyboard shortcuts. Just search for the app and you get the corresponding keyboard shortcuts. Be it Gmail, Google Reader, Firefox, Google Chrome or any other app you could think of, you'll find the keyboard shortcuts for that app on this site.

  4. Use a Download Manager
If you frequently download stuff from the web then a download manager could save you loads of time. A download manager usually comes with many advanced features which could make downloading files a breeze for you.

There are many good download managers out there which you could try. Lifehacker has a list of five best download managers. Go, take a look.

  5. Prefer reading in your feed reader
RSS feeds are a great way to consume lot of information at one place. It also saves the time you would take to visit all those sites separately. Hence try to get into the habit of using it more often to read content on the web.

  6. Use Tidyread or Readability Bookmarklet
If RSS is not your thing and you love visiting websites and blogs then you might consider using Tidyread or the Readability bookmarklet to speed up the rendering of web pages.

Both these apps strip the web pages off the heavy things like scripts, images etc and present content with better readability.

  7. Use the Hyperwords Firefox extension
Google Chrome may be faster but my love for Firefox isn't gone yet. And it will remain my browser of choice until Chrome has extensions like Hyperwords.

Hyperwords adds loads of things to your right click inside the browser which provides easy access to a lot of information, thereby saving time and helping you become a more productive web surfer.

  8. Make Firefox faster
Staying with Firefox, those using it would know that it tends to become slow and nagging over time. But there are ways to make it faster. You could consider creating a new profile, uninstalling useless add-ons or clearing preferences of installed add-ons.

  9. Use a Password Manager & Form Filler
I have written about some awesome password managers before. Most of them come with built-in form fillers. Apart from securing your passwords, they save you time by filling web forms and quickly generating secure passwords for your new online accounts.

How to Consolidate Multiple Inboxes into One

Fairly recently here at Dumb Little Man, I wrote a post which shared my tips on clearing a massively crowded inbox. At the time, I had 5 email accounts and they all had thousands of emails into them. From the advice on that post, I showed how anyone in a similar situation can get the size of their inbox down, quickly and efficiently.

What I didn't touch upon in that article is how I managed to merge all of my inboxes together. I went from 4 that I would check daily, and 1 that I would check weekly, to only using one now every single day. With more and more people moving online each day, there are new services coming out to handle our needs and multiple solutions that people use.

My first email account was with my school, and then I moved to Lycos, and then to Hotmail (which was purchased by Microsoft). These days, as a webmaster, I use Google Apps to give me an email address that not only includes my domain name, but gives me all the features of Gmail.

In this article I want to share my tips on consolidating your inboxes into just one in order to make life a little easier.

Organise Each Account Before You Move Anything
Before you forward all emails to the one account you have chosen or import them anywhere, tidy it up first. You can find most of my tips on this here, but as a summary:
  • Un-subscribe from email lists you no longer care about
  • Turn-off unnecessary communications from social networks, forums and the like
  • Search for phrases which you know will only show junk messages and remove them all at once
  • Make sure you save your password and registration type emails before removing anything
Once you have your inbox clear, you can then look at consolidation.

Import All Necessary Emails

Now that things are tidy, you will want to move all important emails from each account into their final home. The process on how to do this will vary greatly depending on what type of email set-up you are using.

Some great guides for some of the most common moves can be found on the following sites:
  • Moving from Hotmail to Gmail - Here
  • Moving from Outlook to Gmail - Here
  • Moving from Outlook to Thunderbird - Here
If you are using some other service or moving your emails in a different direction, a quick Google search will usually help you with your specific needs.

Forward Future Emails from Each Account
Now that all your emails are in one place, you still don't want to go back to other services to check for new emails. Before 'leaving' each account for good, you need to make sure that future emails each receives will all go to the same account.

You can do this in Gmail by going to Settings; Forwarding; Then enter your email address

You are also given the option to choose whether you want to keep incoming emails in this newly redundant account or simply forward to your new account and then delete in the old.

To forward Outlook emails somewhere else you can go to Tools; Rules and Alerts; Then create a new forwarding rule

Update Friends & Websites With Your Email Address
The solution of forwarding isn't very useful if you still have to open Outlook or Thunderbird everyday for emails to be forwarded to your final account. For this reason, make sure you tell your friends, co-workers and family about your change of address.

It might be best to do this by sending out a mass email.

Similarly, it's a good idea to update your email address on websites you use or lists you subscribe to so that you can guarantee proper delivery of your emails. Examples of this include your Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or online forum accounts.

Choose Your Email Signature Carefully

Some people have multiple email accounts because one is for business and one is for personal use. If that is the case, I recommend you keep things that way unless otherwise necessary. In my situation, I had multiple personal accounts that didn't really need to be separate.

I run a lot of websites and each have their own contact form, so I had to be especially careful about the email signature I choose. If people are emailing you about one thing and your signature is related to something completely different, it's likely that they will be confused.

See if there is an option in whatever client you are using to be able to switch between multiple signatures either manually or based on certain words that the email contains. This way you won't be sending out any confusing messages.

Ten Useful & Interesting Google Docs Hacks

It's true that Google Docs isn't perfect. It's true that it cannot be compared to Microsoft Office. Not yet. But the fact of the matter is that it is the best web office tool available and millions of users use it everyday.

Google Docs, since its inception has been rising steadily in popularity. It has added some wonderful features over the years and if you are someone who doesn't need to play with lots of complex data everyday, then Google Docs could easily suffice most of your requirements. It's free, easy to use and can be accessed from any computer which has internet.

Here are some tips which would help to enhance your everyday experience with Google Docs.

Import / Export & Backup
  1. Windows users can use DocList Uploader, a nifty app to bulk upload documents and sheets to your Google Docs account. You could either drag and drop files or right click and add files.

  2. If you use Google Desktop then there is a nice Google Docs gadget which makes the task of uploading multiple files to your Google Docs account easier. Just drag and drop files and you are done. It also allows you to search and access online documents from your desktop.

  3. GDocsUploader is another such tool for those using Mac OS X operating system. It can be used to quickly upload files and even photos to Picasa web albums.

  4. If you need to bulk download your Google Docs files then you need to use this Greasemonkey script in conjunction with DownloadThemAll add-on for Firefox. The script page has detailed step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

  5. GDocbackup is another tiny utility which can export all your documents from Google Docs to your hard disk drive. It also allows you to choose the export format, which is pretty cool.
Synchronization
  1. Offisync is an excellent tool which can sync your Microsoft Office Documents with the web based Google Docs. Check out this detailed post on Read Write Web which talks about some of the cool features of that tool.

  2. If you are looking to download your Google Docs documents to your computer, edit them offline and then sync them back, then Syncplicity can help you. To know more, check this article on Digital Inspiration.
Tips & Tricks
  1. If you want to quickly track your expenses across different banks, credit cards or other sources then take a look at this awesome trick involving Gmail and Google Docs. In fact this trick could be used for tracking a lot of other things too. Really cool.

  2. A tip which I've personally found to be quite useful while working on Google Docs is using the full screen mode. It reduces the clutter and helps you focus on the main thing. Just press Ctrl+Shift+F or go to View -> Full-Screen to use it.

  3. A neat feature of Google Docs is that it allows you to run online polls or surveys and quickly gather information from friends or customers. Here is an article describing the steps to do it.

7 Great VoIP Alternatives To Skype

skype videoSkype is one of the most widely used VoIP service providers for computer based communication in the world. The success of VoIP has taken the world by storm and most likely given many telephone providers a run for their money due to their great pricing structures.

To me, Skype has long been a useful business tool which I use to stay in touch with clients worldwide. It certainly beats using the land line which costs me a fortune for international calls, especially for countries such as Switzerland (where my family and some of my best friends live). You can imagine that a weekly phone call on a land line would cost me about $60 and this is with a reduced plan already.

With success comes competition. In recent years we've seen several new apps and organizations spring up with their own Skype-like capabilities. Here are some of my favorites. Check them out, choose one you like and begin saving money if you haven't jumped on board yet.

  1. Vbuzzer
Vbuzzer allows users to send instant messages after downloading the software onto their computer. US and Canada residents can also enjoy free Internet faxing with this provider. VoIP services are available and start at 1.5c/min.

  2. VoIPBuster
This software promises great results to existing Skype users. Sending an SMS to a US based account holder from the US will only cost you 8 cents per message. What looks really attractive to me though is their FREE calls network of some 36 popular countries. When you buy credit with the company you can call any of the landlines within the approved countries for free. Please read the guidelines as some limitations apply.

  3. Smart VoIP
SmartVoIP is another VoIP client that promises you cheap rates and great service. According to their list, rates are incredible cheap and chances are that you will benefit from using them and save money. You can also make phone-to-phone calls with this software client.

  4. ooVoo
If video calling with several friends (or business partners) is your thing then ooVoo is a great client to research further. ooVoo comes with several usage plans and you can also use the service to call others, send files and chat with text.

  5. GoogleTalk
Probably known to most Gmail users, Google Talk is directly integrated into your Gmail account. To be honest, I don't like using this service because of the integration. It distracts me from doing what I set out to do, namely to read and reply to my emails. You can however download GoogleTalk as a separate software to using it in Gmail which is probably the safer method if you don't want to waste unnecessary time.

  6. iChat
iChat is the instant chat messaging suite for Mac users. It is a powerful messaging sofware that allows you to place video calls and much more with the integration of your iSight video camera.

  7. Jajah
Jajah needs to be seen since it promises to connect you free of charge to any phone in the world on your first call. You simply insert your own home number, then your friend's number and press the green call button on their website. It will then connect you with your chosen line. There is a system in place that limits you to the amount of time you can use free phone calls though but having said this, Jajah is worth a closer look if you want to save money calling overseas.

5 Things To Do When Twitter Goes Down

Back in the good old days, when it was only just starting up and no-one really saw the point, Twitter used to crash all the time. Scarcely a day went by without the poor unfortunate user base getting confronted by the “Fail Whale”, Twitter’s corporate error page mascot and terrifying avatar of an hour or two without internet inanity.

Nowadays, as the service scales up faster than a lizard on a stretched bungee rope, most people still don’t see the point and outages are a thing of the past. Or so we thought.

On the sixth of August 2009, Twitter was knocked offline for a several hours by a malicious denial-of-service attack which, depending on whom you believe, was either the idle whim of a bored teenager or a move by the Kremlin designed to silence a Georgian dissenter. Regardless of the cause, millions of internet users were left without a source of banal amusement.

And since neither the 15 year olds of 4chan nor the Russian state are going anywhere, the sensible tweeter needs to have a backup plan for when it all goes horribly wrong.

Here are a few suggestions...
  • Complain about the injustice of it all
This is probably the first idea that will come to mind, and one can’t deny the sheer, primal satisfaction of it. Rush to your message board or blog comment thread of choice and let rip! You’ll almost certainly find a good grouping of like-minded individuals who will join you in deriding the laziness of the website for not being up, and the stupidity of anyone involved.

Bitterness is fun, after all, and if we can allow ourselves to eat chocolate occasionally, we can certainly indulge in a spot of senseless venom on the internet. But remember not to overdo it. For there comes a time when you must stop, contemplate and ask yourself... am I becoming one of those 15 year olds on 4chan? And, since it’s quite probable they were responsible for taking down Twitter in the first place, have you not in essence become your own worst enemy?

  • Locate an alternative social network
Back in the mists of time, Twitter wasn’t the only game in town. Other networks existed, even if they didn’t have the up to the moment, real time updates element. And although it may seem like everyone in the universe has moved on to Twitter by now, in practice there’s usually a few people who haven’t bothered because they don’t see the point or, disturbingly, they think Facebook provides all their social networking needs.

So why not catch up with them? You’d be amazed how many quick messages to old friends you can dash off in the same number of key-presses as four or five tweets. And if, like me, you spend far too long thinking about the contents of your tweets, you’ll be able to put a good bit of thought into these messages too. If you don’t usually put much thought into the tweets, just send them a message saying “WAAAAASSUUPP”, and hope they appreciate the sentiment.

  • Kick back and wait for normal service to resume
Who said you need “something to do” when Twitter goes down? Twitter doesn’t rule your life, after all. Why even bother thinking about it? Just stick a DVD on, eat some chips, go the pub, chuck a Frisbee around, talk to a human, shoot a reindeer, anything. The world is a limitless place, full of exciting possibilities and new experiences (unless you are that reindeer), who cares if you can’t send 140 character updates about it to an eager audience of dozens?

Anyway, this short period of time without up-to-the-minute information about the minutiae of your life will just make them want it more when it all comes back.

  • Recreate the Twitter experience
Why live without micro-blogging when you can easily produce the same sensations in the comfort of your own desktop? All you need is a regular source of odd and/or amusing links, such as Boing Boing, a regular list of short updates on people’s lives, such as your Facebook feed, and a small group of people who will pretend to take an interest in the details of your day-to-day life, such as the homeless chaps from the street outside.

Arrange all of the above in a row, and you’ll wonder why you ever needed Twitter in the first place. Until it comes back, when you can breathe a sigh of relief, catch up with your friends and finally kick those tramps back out into the street.

6 Smart Gmail Tricks

gmailI'm sure most of you would agree that Gmail has revolutionized the way we communicate and manage information via email. If you doubt it then it means that you are yet to exploit the extraordinary features of this email app to the fullest.

This article explores some of the outstanding Gmail features and tricks which make this tool a must have for anyone using email to communicate. The features discussed here will also help long time Gmail users to dig deeper and get the most out of this amazing service.
  1. Consolidate multiple email accounts into one Gmail account
This is probably the most important reason why one should make the switch if he is using a different email service. With Gmail you don't have to worry about checking your different email accounts. You can consolidate all the multiple inboxes into one Gmail account.

While the option to combine other email accounts into Gmail was always there, recently Gmail made the process a cakewalk by introducing the import option in the settings. It's super easy now to use Gmail as your one stop email service.

  2. Learn to use filters and labels effectively
No other email service lets you filter and organize emails the way Gmail does. Using "Filters" and "Labels" in Gmail, you could always keep unimportant emails out of your inbox and be much more efficient in email management.

Here is an old but still useful article from Lifehack on ways to use Gmail filters. If you are looking to learn more about labels then this article on about.com regarding Gmail labels should help you.

  3. Make use of multiple Gmail addresses you get with one account
This is a gem. And if you didn't know about this, here's the surprise - with Gmail you actually get an unlimited number of different email addresses. Yes, unlimited! How? Well abc@gmail.com is same as a.bc@gmail.com and abc+def@gmail.com. More on this here.

Oh, and abc@gmail.com is also same as abc@googlemail.com. Awesome feature, isn't it? This feature could be used in so many ways. Like in this article, the Digital Inspiration blog points out how you could use one email for multiple twitter accounts. That's just one use. There could be many more such tricks. Get the picture?

  4. Use Gmail Labs
In my opinion, the next best thing the Gmail team has done after launching Gmail is introducing Gmail Labs. I wasn't gung-ho about it initially but when the different labs add-ons started rolling out, I was completely speechless. Gmail became more amazing each day.

There are a number of Labs tools you could enable. Here are my favorite picks.

  5. Use Browser add-ons
If Firefox is your primary browser (it should be if it isn't), then you could also install certain add-ons which add more functionality to Gmail. Here is an article which talks about some of the best add-ons for Gmail available.

  6. Make Gmail your information center
If you were to ask me the name of one person who has exploited Gmail more than anyone else, I would instantly say Steve Rubel. The man has written some great articles on how he uses the various features of Gmail to organize information efficiently. One such article is about how he transformed Gmail into his personal nerve center. It's an excellent read.

Jelas yah. 

internet explorer, search engine www.google.com

mozilla firefox, search engine www.google.com

Nanti Anda malah jadi bingung lagi karena tampilannya beda, “kok kayak gini sih, perasaan friendster nggak kayak gini?” ya iya lah, salah ketik. Biasanya kalo udah bingung, Anda malah tambah salah lagi, anda malah coba ngetik www.friendstar.com, atau mungkin frendster.com, dan lain-lain sebagainya. Jelas yah.

Semoga bermanfaat. Terima kasih

Awal Mula Internet

Awal Mula Internet (Sejarah Internet versi singkat)

Juni 1987, format gambar gif ditemukan.

Kelanjutan dari world wide web?

Silahkan sampaikan melalui form komentar.

20 Tips for More Efficient Google Searches

For millions of people Google is an indispensable search tool that they use every day, in all facets of their lives. From work or school, research, to looking up movies and celebrities to news and gossip, Google is the go-to search engine.

But instead of just typing in a phrase and wading through page after page of results, there are a number of ways to make your searches more efficient.

Some of these are obvious ones, that you probably know about. But others are lesser-known, and others are known but not often used. Use this guide to learn more about, or be reminded of, some of the best ways to get exactly what you're looking for, and quickly.
  1. Either/or
Google normally searches for pages that contain all the words you type in the search box, but if you want pages that have one term or another (or both), use the OR operator -- or use the "|" symbol (pipe symbol) to save you a keystroke. [dumb | little | man]

  2. Quotes
If you want to search for an exact phrase, use quotes. ["dumb little man"] will only find that exact phrase. [dumb "little man"] will find pages that contain the word dumb and the exact phrase "little man".

  3. Not
If you don't want a term or phrase, use the "-" symbol. [-dumb little man] will return pages that contain "little" and "man" but that don't contain "dumb".

  4. Similar terms
Use the "~" symbol to return similar terms. [~dumb little man -dumb] will get you pages that contain "funny little man" and "stupid little man" but not "dumb little man".

  5. Wildcard
The "*" symbol is a wildcard. This is useful if you're trying to find the lyrics to a song, but can't remember the exact lyrics. [can't * me love lyrics] will return the Beatles song you're looking for. It's also useful for finding stuff only in certain domains, such as
educational information: ["dumb little man" research *.edu].

  6. Advanced search
If you can't remember any of these operators, you can always use Google's advanced search.

  7. Definitions
Use the "define:" operator to get a quick definition. [define:dumb] will give you a whole host of definitions from different sources, with links.

  8. Calculator
One of the handiest uses of Google, type in a quick calculation in the search box and get an answer. It's faster than calling up your computer's calculator in most cases. Use the +, -, *, / symbols and parentheses to do a simple equation.

  9. Numrange
This little-known feature searches for a range of numbers. For example, ["best books 2002..2007] will return lists of best books for each of the years from 2002 to 2007 (note the two periods between the two numbers).

  10. Site-specific
Use the "site:" operator to search only within a certain website. [site:dumblittleman.com leo] will search for the term "leo" only within this blog.

  11. Backlinks
The "link:" operator will find pages that link to a specific URL. You can use this not only for a main URL but even to a specific page. Not all links to an URL are listed, however.

  12. Vertical search
Instead of searching for a term across all pages on the web, search within a specialized field. Google has a number of specific searches, allowing you to search within blogs, news, books, and much more:
  13. Movies
Use the "movie:" operator to search for a movie title along with either a zip code or U.S. city and state to get a list of movie theaters in the area and show times.

  14. Music
The "music:" operator returns content related to music only.

  15. Unit converter
Use Google for a quick conversion, from yards to meters for example, or different currency: [12 meters in yards]

  16. Types of numbers
Google algorithms can recognize patterns in numbers you enter, so you can search for:

    • Telephone area codes
    • Vehicle ID number (US only)
    • Federal Communications Commission (FCC) equipment numbers (US only)
    • UPC codes
    • Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airplane registration number (US only)
    • Patent numbers (US only)
    • Even stock quotes (using the stock symbol) or a weather forecast regarding the next five days
  17. File types
If you just want to search for .PDF files, or Word documents, or Excel spreadsheets, for example, use the "filetype:" operator.

  18. Location of term
By default, Google searches for your term throughout a web page. But if you just want it to search certain locations, you can use operators such as "inurl:", "intitle:", "intext:", and "inanchor:". Those search for a term only within the URL, the title,
the body text, and the anchor text (the text used to describe a link).

  19. Cached pages
Looking for a version of a page the Google stores on its own servers? This can help with outdated or update pages. Use the "cached:" operator.

  20. Answer to life, the universe, and everything
Search for that phrase, in lower case, and Google will give you the answer.
